These are my favourite flowers - peonies. They seem to have a short season so I buy them much more often than I usually buy flowers because I luf them. They are blousy and bright and in your face. A bit like Bet Lynch behind the bar in Coronation Street. Then, after a couple of days they open really wide and the colour starts to change - fading down to a very pleasing creamy colour.
So I was thinking - do you think they remind you of people? We may not be as bright and bushy tailed as we were but maybe still interesting, still pretty in a sort of droopy kind of way and still pleasing to an experienced eye.I expect it's just me then.

ReplyDeleteIn France we discovered a huge bank of white scented peonies in the garden of a house that we bought. They must have been there for years, still kept coming up fresh and yes, blowsy.
I have one in my garden. It doesn't flower.

DeletePeonies. I love them. Especially the shade of pink you have in your post, rather than the dark red or fuchsia pick varieties. Do you grow them too? We have quite a big garden but have no peonies growing there, because all the spaces already have something in that we love, and peonies need room.
ReplyDeleteI have a square patch just grass (by the sandpit for the children to play) and mint. I was supposed to dig it up and plant strawberries this winter, but couldn't bring myself to because the mint looks so happy. It's striding about in great clumps.
I have asked Head of House to look into growing them. Apparently they used to be very popular and everybody had one in the garden. I think they must be making a comeback now.
